Approach

Get the feedback you need.

You can’t do it alone, no one ever has and no one ever will. Think about getting dressed in the morning without a mirror: a very risky proposition. You may feel like you look good and you may walk out the door with full confidence in your appearance. But you can’t really know if how you feel matches how others see you. And even a mirror only gives you feedback in two dimensions. To really know how you look and, more importantly, the impact you have on others, you need a three-dimensional perspective: another set of eyes, that can see your situation in multiple dimensions. We all have blind spots and we need someone we can trust to give honest, helpful feedback.

Gain a new perspective.

Experience teaches us a lot, but it also may limit our vision. We develop assumptions based on our experience that tend to work well as long as things stay the same. But when things change, our past assumptions may drive old patterns of thought and behavior that can fail us in new circumstances. At times like this, we need to put aside old mindsets and adopt a new, more effective way of looking at the world.

Develop a plan.

Along with a new way of looking at the world, we must develop a strategy to address the changes we face. To drive action, we need to develop a clear vision for success, understand the internal and external obstacles we face, and create a plan with clear goals and objectives, and measurable milestones.
